Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge
Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge is a large wetlands area located where the Saline and Ouachita Rivers meet. Rivers, creeks, sloughs, and lakes cut through the refuge bottomland, which turns into an upland forest. The Felsenthal basin usually has about 15,000 acres of water. That amount can more than double to 36,000 acres during seasonal flooding.
Established in 1975 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with the Felsenthal Lock and Dam, the refuge is home to 1,150 species of plants and animals. The refuge also safeguards over 200 Native American dig sites, most having Caddo origins. They hold old fishing camps and ceremonial plazas, temple mounds and villages.
